;When I am in my work, creating art or teaching art, I strive to have a beginner's mind. That is, I attempt to approach all things as if for the first time, with a clear and fresh perception. My work is to keep my heart and mind open to possibility.
As I grew up, I sensed my need to hold and share my view of the world with other people. Around the age of eight, I began my career as artist and teacher on the front porch of my family's home, giving art lessons and making art, hoping others would see things through my eyes. Philadelphia was hot in the summer, so my family would go on camping trips and explore nature. I pursued my love of art by attending Moore College of Art and becoming a generalist classroom teacher and then, art educator.
I find the creative process mysterious and magical. Currently, my work incorporates paintings, photos and found objects. The process is intuitive as objects and materials are ingredients that interact with each other to re-present an idea, memory or experience. When I feel they have an affinity with each other, things are placed together. I reposition several elements, add and remove, draw, paint and wait for each piece to tell me what is needed. Meanings emerge as the composition becomes defined.
