Watercolors : The watercolors are the oldest works represented on my website. Several of the paintings include chalk pastel or oil pastel, under or over the paint. Although I was trained in Oil Painting, I prefer to use water-based media when possible.
Mosaics: Philadelphia has many treasures, two of which impacted my need to work in this medium: the Tiffany Parrish "Dream Garden" mosaic and the work of Isaiah Zagar (found in and aroud the South Philly/South Street area.) After working on the Haddon Township Mosaic Mural with my students and fellow artist Stacey Douglas, I was invited to exhibit in a show to honor Isaiah Zagar at the Perkins Art Center! I continue to work with mosaic as opportunities happen.
Portals: The Portals series began as a response to Japanese Sumi Painting classes I took at PAFA one summer. Its elemental nature inspired play with transparency and opacity, matte and irridescent surfaces, and the fluidity of pigments suspended in water. The images refer directly to my experiences with water.
Assemblage/Mixed Media: Objects, things, stuff. I am a collector of postcards, pebbles, bird feathers, stuff. My friends know this and they give me stuff; I find stuff when walking in the woods, when skimming through the flea market...I began placing things/materials in arrangements in my studio where they seemed to belong. Pieces continue to evolve from this process.
